Between the lake, mountains and history
Mondsee combines a beautiful natural setting with the character of an established small town. Situated on the northern shore of Lake Mondsee and surrounded by the mountains of the Salzkammergut, it offers a distinctive mix of lakeside living, tourism and everyday community life. The lake shapes the rhythm of the warmer months, when swimming, water sports, walks along the shore and excursions into the surrounding mountains become part of daily life.
The town also has a rich history. The former monastery and the impressive Basilica of St Michael are reminders of Mondsee's long past. At the same time, cafés, restaurants and local shops make the centre more than just a destination for visitors. It remains an important meeting place for residents throughout the year, although the summer season naturally brings a livelier atmosphere.
Good local amenities in a small town
On 1 January 2026, Mondsee had approximately 3,955 residents. Its population has grown by around 19% since 2011. About 12% of residents are under 15, while approximately 22% are aged 65 or older.
For a municipality of this size, the range of local amenities is impressive. Within two kilometres of the centre, there are several kindergartens and schools, around ten supermarkets and grocery stores, and a good selection of restaurants and cafés. Medical services are also available nearby, including doctors' practices and pharmacies.
Many everyday destinations are within easy walking distance. The nearest supermarket and kindergarten are each around 150 metres from the centre, while the nearest primary and middle schools are approximately 450 metres away. This makes Mondsee appealing to people who value short journeys for shopping, school and routine appointments.
Road connections and commuting
The A1 motorway is one of Mondsee's major advantages for drivers. It runs around 350 metres from the town centre, and the nearest motorway junction is approximately 1.2 kilometres away. The B151 is also close by.
Public transport is less convenient, particularly for longer commutes. The nearest railway station, Oberhofen-Zell am Moos, is about 12 kilometres away, and there is no railway line within that radius of the town. By public transport, Vöcklabruck can be reached in roughly 70 minutes, Linz in around two hours and Vienna in approximately three hours and 35 minutes, each with one transfer.
Salzburg Airport is about 27 kilometres away in a straight line, providing a convenient option for scheduled flights.
Climate, quiet surroundings and flood risk
The climate is relatively mild for a lakeside Alpine region. Between 2015 and 2024, the average annual temperature was around 10.7 °C, compared with 9.6 °C in the 1991–2020 reference period. Mondsee recorded approximately 16 hot days per year on average.
According to the 2022 strategic noise maps, the town centre is outside the mapped noise zones for major roads, railways, airports and industrial areas. This is a positive indication, although individual streets can still experience different noise levels.
One important consideration is flood risk. The town centre lies within a mapped HQ100 flood area, representing an event with a statistically estimated return period of 100 years. Anyone considering buying property in Mondsee should therefore check the specific location and applicable hazard-zone information carefully.
Mondsee offers an attractive combination of lakeside scenery, mountain surroundings, convenient local amenities and excellent motorway access, but its limited rail connections and mapped flood risk deserve careful consideration when choosing it as a place to live.
