Korneuburg lies on the northern bank of the Danube, just a few kilometres north of Vienna. The town combines a historic centre with convenient access to the capital and the landscapes along the river. Residents benefit from an independent local community with shops, restaurants and everyday amenities, while Vienna remains within reach for work, education and leisure.
As of 1 January 2026, Korneuburg had approximately 13,800 residents. Its population has grown by around 12.3% since 2011, making it an increasingly popular place to live in the Vienna suburbs while retaining its identity as an established regional town.
A Town Centre with a Life of Its Own
Korneuburg is not simply a commuter town where life revolves around residential neighbourhoods and the journey to work. Its centre offers restaurants, cafés and shops, while the nearby Danube provides opportunities for walks and outdoor activities. The historic street layout gives the town a distinctive atmosphere compared with the more spread-out residential areas around Vienna.
Within two kilometres of the centre, the available data records three kindergartens, ten schools, 14 supermarkets and grocery stores, 22 restaurants and nine cafés. There are also two pharmacies and numerous public transport stops.
However, the distances to individual amenities can be longer than the compact town centre might suggest. The nearest kindergarten is approximately 950 metres from the centre, while the nearest primary school is around 850 metres away. Families and people who prefer to manage everyday errands on foot should therefore consider the specific neighbourhood rather than judging the town as a whole.
By Train to Vienna, by Motorway to the Region
One of Korneuburg's advantages is its railway station, located approximately 550 metres from the town centre. On a typical weekday, the journey to Vienna Central Station takes around 45 minutes by public transport, including one transfer. For commuters, this is a useful connection, although the actual journey depends on timetables and the onward trip to the workplace.
Korneuburg is also well connected by road. The A22 motorway runs very close to the town centre, and the nearest motorway access is only a few hundred metres away. This makes travelling towards Vienna and other parts of the region convenient, but it also means traffic deserves consideration when choosing where to live.
The 2022 strategic noise maps indicate road-traffic noise levels of 65–69 dB in the town centre. These figures represent the day-evening-night noise indicator and provide a general guide rather than a measurement for every street. Some locations may be considerably quieter or noisier.
The Danube, Open Landscapes and Outdoor Living
Korneuburg's position along the Danube shapes both its geography and its appeal as a place to live. Riverside walks, cycling routes and excursions into the surrounding countryside offer a welcome break from daily routines. At the same time, Vienna is close enough for residents to enjoy a much broader range of cultural activities, entertainment and urban amenities.
The local climate is relatively warm. The average annual temperature around the town centre was approximately 12.5°C between 2015 and 2024, compared with 11.4°C during the 1991–2020 reference period. The area experienced around 35 hot days per year on average, making shading and protection against summer heat worth considering when looking for a home.
One positive factor is that the town centre lies outside the flood areas shown in the available HQ100 and HQ300 hazard maps. However, individual properties should still be assessed according to their precise location and local conditions.
Korneuburg is particularly appealing to people who want an independent town with good connections to Vienna and easy access to the Danube. Its combination of historic streets, everyday amenities and convenient access to the capital makes it an attractive residential option north of Vienna.
